So everybody’s kind of like, ‘What do we do?’” “I remember all the infielders kind of just standing back and not really knowing what to do, kind of looking around as Jeter and Pettitte are walking to the mound. “And I saw those two guys coming out of the dugout, and I was like, ‘I’m sure as hell not going to be the first guy out there to that mound with those two guys walking over there to get him.’ “Usually, the catcher is the first guy out there,” Murphy said. Pettitte put a hand on the back of Rivera’s neck and then wrapped his arms around Rivera. ![]() An emotional Rivera put his head on Pettitte’s right shoulder and began to cry. What happened on the mound was memorable. “So I just took my time, I guess, and made sure I was within respectable distance, whatever I thought that was.” But you still don’t know what’s about to happen on the mound, right? “You see them coming out, you know they’re going to take him out of the game. “I didn’t in any way want to interfere,” Murphy said. But no, there was Murphy, still behind the plate when Jeter and Pettitte, both smiling, made their way toward a smiling Rivera. Before this game, Murphy was sure that would happen, this being Rivera’s last home game. In one of those starts, Murphy had been replaced in the eighth inning by veteran catcher Chris Stewart. ![]() This was his 14 th game and fourth start. That’s more or less what happened to Murphy, then 22, a September call-up and in the big leagues for the first time.
